Artificial intelligence (AI) processes massive amounts of information, generates new content, and facilitates decision-making through predictive analysis.
In education, AI has transformed the traditional teacher-student relationship into a teacher-AI-student dynamic. This shift necessitates a redefinition of teachers’ roles and the skills required in the AI era. However, few countries have defined these skills or developed national programs to train teachers in AI, leaving many educators without proper guidance.
In 2022, only seven countries had created frameworks or programs on AI for teachers.
The AI Competency Framework for Teachers addresses this gap by outlining the knowledge, skills, and values teachers need to master in the age of AI. Developed with principles that safeguard teachers’ rights, enhance human autonomy, and promote sustainability, this publication details 15 competencies organized into five dimensions:
- Human-Centered Mindset
- AI Ethics
- Foundations and Applications of AI
- AI Pedagogy
- AI for Professional Learning
These competencies are structured across three progression levels: Acquire, Deepen, and Create. As a global reference, this tool guides the development of national AI competency frameworks, informs teacher training programs, and helps design assessment parameters. It also provides strategies to empower teachers to enhance their AI knowledge, apply ethical principles, and support their professional growth.
