On October 30, 2024, the French Senate published an extensive report on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into the French educational system. This document explores the opportunities, challenges, and recommendations for effectively incorporating AI in the country’s educational institutions.
While digital tools have long been used in learning, it is now essential to consider the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI), which is significantly transforming educational approaches and greatly expanding possibilities (e.g., ChatGPT, generative AI).
The question is no longer whether AI should have a place in education, as it is already present, but rather « how to support ongoing developments and address the challenges of education through and with AI. » Indeed, there are numerous use cases where AI could make a major contribution to teaching practices: adaptive learning, real-time tracking of progress, support for skill development, educational engineering, and more. However, there are still significant disparities in how tools are adopted.
The report highlights three main areas for the future:
- Better supporting education professionals by defining a framework for use and providing easier access to tools.
- Massively training and promoting the emergence of a citizen culture of AI in and outside of school.
- Evaluating tools, deepening research, and experimenting.
The Senate report emphasizes that integrating AI into the French educational system represents a major opportunity to modernize education and make it more suited to the challenges of the 21st century. However, this transition requires a thoughtful and collaborative approach to ensure that AI technologies are used ethically, securely, and beneficially for all actors in the educational sector.
